Overview
The Sugarcane Research Institute, Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GXAAS), Guangxi, Nanning, P.R. China, the International Association of Professionals in Sugar and Integrated Technologies (IAPSIT), Guangxi, Nanning, P.R. China and the Society for Sugar Research & Promotion (SSRP), New Delhi, India are jointly organizing the 9th International Sugar Conference (ISC 2026) to be held in Guangxi, Nanning, PR China, from November 17-20, 2026. The theme of the conference will be Next-Gen Challenges, Opportunities & Future-Proofing the Sugar Industry through Innovation. Globally, the sugar sector stands at a crucial moment, facing rising pressures from climate change, shifting consumer preferences, and the need for sustainable production systems. Next-generation sugar production challenges such as weather extremes, water scarcity, soil degradation, and stricter environmental regulations demand bold, transformative approaches rather than incremental improvements. At the same time, recent technological breakthroughs present unprecedented opportunities to future-proof the industry.
At this juncture, innovation remains central to the transformation of sugar sector. New improved varieties, precision agriculture, application of drones/remote sensing, artificial intelligence-driven analytics, mechanisation, automation, and farm consolidation will help optimize resource use, reduce production costs, and boost productivity and sustainability of sugar industries globally. Biotechnological advancements including genome editing offer new opportunities to develop varieties of sugar crops more resilient to climate change, pests, diseases and mechanised farming. Meanwhile, cutting edge sugar processing technologies can increase sugar milling efficiency, minimize energy consumption, and reduce carbon footprints. Beyond sugar production, diversification is becoming an essential strategy for the long-term sustainability of sugar industry.
Sugar crops are no longer valued solely for sugar; it has become a very competitive, sustainable feedstock for biofuels, bioplastics, green chemicals, Bio-CNG, SAF, green hydrogen and renewable energy. Embracing a circular, bio-based economy can unlock new revenue streams and strengthen long-term sector resilience. Ultimately, the next generation of the sugar industry will be defined by its ability to innovate and adapt sustainably. By investing in advanced technologies, fostering research partnerships, and prioritizing environmental stewardship, the sugar sector can thrive in a rapidly changing global landscape.
ISC 2026 will provide a great opportunity and a vibrant platform for all stakeholders from sugar industries across the globe to connect, share knowledge, explore cutting-edge technologies, and co-create a strategic roadmap for future proofing the industry through innovation. The conference will be attended by leading researchers, technologists, R&D managers, industry leaders, bio-energy experts, manufacturers, suppliers, policymakers and progressive farmers from over 25 countries, who will share their views and experiences on new initiatives and innovations for the sustainable growth of sugar and integrated industries across the globe. ISC 2026 will emphasis the development of a next-generation roadmap for a resilient and sustainable global sugar and bio-energy Industry, with a strong focus on future-proofing the sugar sector through scientific and technological innovation.
